Mixing clay colours

This is a great option if you have leftover clay that needs using up or if you’re lacking glazing inspiration.

Mixing two or more types of clay can create beautiful swirling patterns in your work on the potter’s wheel. Simply choose two types of clay, press the balls together and start working on the wheel. The final pattern is somewhat unpredictable, but can produce beautiful results.

The way you combine the two colours of clay affects the end result, as does the way you throw. For example, if you move up and down a lot when centring, the clay will mix more than if you quickly move on to shaping.

Make sure the clays are compatible in terms of firing temperature and shrinkage. If one type shrinks more than the other, unsightly cracks could appear in your work. And that would be a shame!
