The layer of glaze absorbs the pigment, allowing you to obtain very bright, vibrant colours even after firing. The big disadvantage, though, is that you can’t correct mistakes. Once the pigment is absorbed, all you can do is try to wash away the entire layer of glaze and start over. So the bar has been set high!
