Embroidery on ceramics

Embroidery on ceramics is an unexpected combination of textiles and clay. Thread and earth come together to create a new, tactile world. The combination of hard, fragile clay and soft stitching produces unique patterns that break down the barriers between materials and tell new stories.

Forever learning.

After firing, small holes are made in the ceramic through which embroidery can be done with a needle and thread. This creates patterns and stitching that resemble textiles, but on a hard and fragile surface. The combination of soft thread and firm clay produces an exciting contrast, creating something that is tactile, poetic and vulnerable all at once. Some artists drill the holes themselves, while others make room for embroidery during the forming process.

The technique of embroidering on ceramics invites delay, connection and experimentation. With each stitch, the hard material becomes more malleable.
