Tenmoku, also known as temmoku, is a traditional Japanese glaze renowned for its deep, dark hue. It is usually black or brown with a subtle sheen of red, gold, or metallic flecks. Originally used for Chinese tea bowls in the Song dynasty, it later became popular in Japanese tea ceremonies.
During the firing process, natural effects such as an oily sheen, iron spots or metallic reflections are created.
