Crystal glazes are a specific type of glaze in which crystals grow spontaneously during firing. They contain zinc and other metals which crystallise into flower- or star-like patterns under the right conditions in the kiln.
The process is technically challenging: the kiln is first fired to a high temperature, then slowly cooled at a precise rate to allow the crystals to grow. No two pieces are the same; each crystal forms in its own unique way. The result? A living surface full of depth, lustre and texture.
