Smoke firing

Smoke firing is a traditional firing method. You do not use glaze, but simply fire the workpiece in a drum or saggar with combustible material. The smoke that is generated during the baking penetrates the clay and leads to fine tonal differences and even deep shadows on your workpiece. Smoke firing can typically be done with a layer terra sigillata, a fine slip, on your workpiece.
