Saggar

A saggar is an unbreakable small drum in which ceramic work is placed in the kiln. In the past, saggars were used to protect the workpieces from flames, gases, and debris, which was especially necessary in wood or coal ovens. Now, saggars are mainly used to create a ‘microclimate’ in the kiln, where smoke, vapors, and gases are trapped. These can have an effect on the workpieces. You can fill it with various materials: salt, metal oxides, sulfates… each material gives specific effects. It is best not to place a saggar in an electric kiln: the smoke, gases, and vapors are harmful to the heating elements.
