Sintering

The sintering of clay is a process that occurs during firing. At a temperature of 850°C to 900°C, the silicon particles in the clay melt, causing the clay to ‘glaze’. The clay becomes stronger and waterproof, and also begins to shrink significantly. The sintering particles bond more tightly together, filling the gaps that have been created by organic materials that have previously burned away.
