Convection currents

Movements of liquids or gases caused by temperature differences. In ceramics, convection currents are relevant during firing in a kiln: as the kiln heats up, temperature differences form within it.

These currents can affect the firing process, for example, by influencing how evenly heat is distributed, which in turn affects the consistency of the fired result.
