The resistance a material, such as clay, exerts against a movement or force applied to it, particularly while shaping or working it. In throwing, back pressure occurs when a potter applies pressure to the clay on the wheel. It affects how the clay responds to the potter’s hands and how easily, or not, the desired shape is achieved. Understanding and controlling back pressure is essential for throwing accurate, intentional forms.
