Wedging

An important technique in preparing clay before throwing or hand-building. During wedging, the clay is repeatedly folded, rolled and compressed to remove air pockets, improve its consistency and distribute the clay particles evenly.

The goal of wedging is a homogeneous, air-free clay body that is stronger and less prone to cracking. There are two common methods: the ram’s head (ox-head) method and the spiral method.
