Incising

Incising means using a sharp tool, such as a knife, needle or other pointed instrument, to cut or scratch into still-damp clay. This can be done at various stages of the process, on freshly thrown clay, on slabs, or even on bisque-fired ware. The resulting incisions create lines or patterns that remain visible after firing.
