Now, saggars are mainly used to create a ‘microclimate’ in the kiln, where smoke, vapors, and gases are trapped. These can have an effect on the workpieces. You can fill it with various materials: salt, metal oxides, sulfates… each material gives specific effects. It is best not to place a saggar in an electric kiln: the smoke, gases, and vapors are harmful to the heating elements.

More information >

Saggar fire

See Smoke firing

More information >

Sgraffito

Sgraffito is a decoration technique. You center a large amount of clay, form a large cone, and then make a small piece with the top part each time. Once it’s done, you cut it off and move on to the next one until you run out of clay. Because you don’t have to center each time, you can produce a lot in a short time.

More information >

Tin glaze

Tin glaze is a white, opaque glaze with tin oxide.
